TRADITIONAL JAPANESE COMIC STORYTELLING
BY KATSURA KOHARUDANJI
August 3 – 5, 2007
ACCOMPANIED BY KAMIGATA STYLE LIVE QUARTET OF SHAMISEN, JAPANESE FLUTE AND TAIKO DRUMS
“He weaves a number of side-splitting tales with countless characters.”
- The Daily Record
Raku-go “Punch-line” comic storytelling has entertained generation after generation of Japanese since the 17th century. Unlike the rarefied styles of Kabuki and Noh, Raku-go is a form of popular entertainment that relates the trials and tribulations of the common man and woman in the street. Dressed in full kimono, the solo performer sits on a silk cushion and brings scores of characters from ghosts to geisha, samurai to salaryman, vividly to life in tales punctuated by various tones of voice, gestures and a characteristic punch line. The 2000 & 2001 Edinburgh Festival Fringe’s audience favorite Katsura Koharudanji makes a New York stage debut to introduce the world of Raku-go with his winning combination of Japanese tradition and absurdist hilarity.
The program includes stories from the classic repertoire The Valuable Cow, the perennial favorite boy meets girl meets cow, and the ghost story, Plate Mansion.
*Performed in Japanese with English Subtitles
